HELENA – Cathy Hammann officially announced her candidacy for the Helena City Council for the upcoming 2025 municipal election.

As a longtime leader and advocate for community involvement, Hammann hopes to bring a bold spirit, fresh perspective and a deep commitment to preserving Helena’s hometown values while preparing the city for a prosperous future.

“My passion for service is rooted in tenacity,” Hammann said. “I’ve faced hardship and heartbreak, but those moments refined my resolve. I’m here to represent Helena with truth, transparency and a no-nonsense approach to moving our city forward.”

Having served her community for decades to go along with her career in telecommunications, Hammann wants to bring along a reputation of what she believes is right. Aside from her work, she has served in leadership roles in civic groups in the city of Bessemer and strived to fight local corruption, as well as become close with local law enforcement.

Hammann moved to Helena in August 2023 and felt her new city was ready for renewed leadership.

“Being new to Helena gives me a fresh set of eyes and no ties to old political cliques,” Hammann said. “I’m here to listen and work for the people, not a circle of insiders.”

Hammann feels that with many on the Helena City Council choosing not to run for their seat again, it is a solid time to start with a clean slate and get Helena’s leadership in a good spot.

“I believe now is the perfect time to step up,” Hammann added. “With a period of renewal on the horizon for Helena’s leadership, I can help usher in the next chapter of controlled and smart growth, without losing the hometown heart that makes Helena special.”

As the youngest of four daughters raised in a tight-knit faith-filled family in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Hammann values faith, service and hard work, looking to carry those qualities into her campaign. She believes her late son Christopher and her mother helped shape her spirit of compassion and resilience.

Now, alongside her husband Robert, Hammann feels it is time to serve again.

“City council is where government meets the people,” Hammann said. “This role gives me the chance to hear directly from my neighbors and champion their hopes for our city’s future.”

Hammann’s official Campaign Kickoff Event will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 6-8 p.m. at 2676 Hawthorne Lake Road Helena, AL 35022. Citizen can follow her campaign on Facebook at Cathy Hammann for City Council – Helena, Alabama for more details.
