HELENA – As the temperature warmed up and schools prepared to get out, the city of Helena welcomed in the summer season with its May edition of Helena Old Town Live on Saturday, May 17 at the Helena Amphitheater.
Those in attendance for the weekend’s festivities earned the chance to hear tunes from local musicians like Birmingham singer-songwriter Drayton Farley and local artist LeAlan Carter, as well as John R. Miller.
Helena City Council member Laura Joseph shared how nice it felt to have the event as a way to ring in the summer’s events, giving people a chance to break away from the rigors of daily life.
“What an amazing way to kick off the summer,” Joseph said. “Old Town Live always feels like a celebration, and even more so this time since the kids just got out of school.”
The concert saw Miller play in his first Old Town Live and Farley come to the stage for the first time as the headliner of the event.
Inviting local faces to the amphitheater is something that Joseph and many others put a lot of efforts towards trying to do, giving those in Helena something bigger to watch as they see talent that is from just near them.
“The May concert felt a little bit like a homecoming,” Joseph said. “One of the (Helena Old Town Board’s) goals with Old Town Live is to pair local artists with national artists, so the HOTboard tries to include local artists in every lineup whenever possible.”
The event was in question for the night with heavy rain happening earlier in the day. However, the bad weather let up just in time, and the crowds still showed up for a fun evening.
“Even after the rainstorm earlier in the day, we had over 2,600 guests at this event,” Joseph said. “A great crowd came out to support these artists.”
With more time for families to travel and get around now that school is out for the summer, the city hopes that it will bring in more people from a tourist perspective, especially with a show in both June and July.
The June Old Town Live will showcase pop-country singer-songwriter Adam Doleac with other performances by Cotter Hill and the band Fuller.
“We hope the June show will attract people who haven’t experienced Shelby County or Helena before and give us an opportunity to show off our vibrant Old Town and the beautiful city of Helena,” Joseph said.
The series also still has its Fourth of July night and its Oktoberfest lying ahead following the June concert.
The June edition of Helena’s Old Town Live is set to take place on Saturday, June 14 at the Helena Amphitheater.
