A whopping 13 players from Shelby County found their names on the All-State teams for girls soccer when they were released by the United Soccer Coaches Association, and nearly half of those players also secured spots on the Super All-State team.
The Oak Mountain Eagles, Thompson Warriors, Briarwood Christian Lions, Chelsea Hornets, Spain Park Jaguars and Westminster School at Oak Mountain Knights were all represented on their individual classification’s All-State teams.
In addition, Thompson’s Dia Montiel-Duenas and Charli Gantt, Briarwood’s Taylor Leib and Chelsea’s Laura Russell made the Super All-State First Team and Oak Mountain’s Kati Anne Shepherd and Marley Brown earned spots on the Super All-State Second Team, which compiles the best players across all classifications.
Montiel-Duenas earned Class 7A and Super All-State First Team honors after she scored 29 goals and had 25 assists in her senior season with the Warriors.
Gantt joined her classmate on both squads after scoring 29 goals and assisting on 25 more despite lining up as a defender in coach Dan DeMasters’ formation.
Oak Mountain also had a pair of Super All-State nods in Shepherd and Brown, who both made the Second Team in addition to the Class 7A All-State team.
Shepherd finished off her sophomore year with 25 goals and 16 assists while playing in 23 matches for the Eagles.
Brown matched up with some of 7A’s top attackers and held her own as a defender. She also finished the year with 10 goals and seven assists.
Leib represented Briarwood on the Super All-State First Team and Class 6A All-State team. She had the second-most goals in Shelby County with 40, finishing behind only Indian Springs’ Ashna Mehra’s 45 goals, while also earning 12 assists.
She was joined by two of her teammates on the Class 6A team in senior midfielder Brooklyn Barnett and sophomore forward Taylor Matthews.
Despite moving back in the formation, Barnett still had a standout season for the Lions and finished her senior year with 15 goals and 14 assists on the road to the state title.
Matthews made her mark once more in her sophomore season and ended the year with 12 goals and nine assists across 20 appearances for Briarwood.
Russell capped a phenomenal season for the Chelsea back line with appearances on the Super All-State First Team and Class 6A All-State team. She used her speed to close in on attackers and fend off goals with stellar on-ball defending while also scoring a goal and adding an assist in 20 appearances.
Her teammate Natalie Peacock also made the Class 6A All-State team. The midfielder scored 12 goals, including eight from the field, and earned four assists as the captain for the Hornets.
Spain Park earned two Class 6A All-State honorees with Reese Oldfield and Addy Soehn holding it down for the Jags midfield on the All-State team sheet.
Oldfield’s blazing speed on the wing allowed her to create breakaway goals throughout the season, and she finished as one of the top attackers in Shelby County as the Jags blazed through Class 6A, Area 8.
Soehn also played a key role in Spain Park’s attack and made the All-State team for the third-straight year after making the cut each of the previous two seasons in Class 7A.
Westminster OM’s run to the Final Four was rewarded with a pair of selections to the Class 4A All-State team in Vale Richie and Ava Morrison.
Richie led the way for the Knights offense with 25 goals in her junior season as a forward and also assisted on nine more goals.
Morrison held down the defense for Westminster and racked up 62 clearances and 17 tackles through the season to go with her two goals and one assist on the campaign.
