Shelby County’s historic baseball season led to a massive showing in the All-State baseball teams as 14 different local athletes earned selections when the rosters were released on Saturday, May 31.

Those 14 athletes came from seven different schools as the Thompson Warriors, Chelsea Hornets, Vincent Yellow Jackets, Briarwood Christian Lions, Helena Huskies, Indian Springs School and Coosa Valley Rebels were all represented.

In addition to their All-State First Team selections, two local athletes will be in the running for Mr. Baseball after winning Player of the Year for their respective classifications: Chelsea’s Aiden Hughes and Vincent’s Aiden Poe.

Hughes was named Class 6A Player of the Year after a phenomenal two-way season for the state runner-up Hornets. On the mound, he finished with a county-best 0.94 ERA and earned a 1.08 WHIP with 11.6 strikeouts per seven innings.

He also earned a .447 average at the plate with a .529 on-base percentage.

Poe earned similar honors as the Class 2A Player of the Year after earning the classification’s Pitcher of the Year award last year. The Air Force signee finished the year with a 12-1 record, 1.19 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and a county-high 128 strikeouts against just 16 walks.

In addition, Poe finished with a .450 average, .563 on-base percentage and .661 slugging percentage thank tot his 49 hits, 35 RBI, 10 doubles and three home runs.

Both players were part of multiple selections for their respective teams.

Poe was one of three First Team selections for Vincent and four total honorees after the Jackets won their first state title since 1985.

Grayson Gulde earned All-State First Team honors thanks to his .442 average, .591 on-base percentage and .705 slugging percentage. He earned 39 runs and 34 RBI off 42 hits, including 13 doubles and four home runs, and he finished 17-for-20 on stolen base attempts.

It is Gulde’s second All-State First Team selection of the academic year after he was up for Class 2A Lineman of the Year during football season.

Landon Archer joined his teammates with his first All-State selection, earning a First Team honor as a utility player. Archer made his biggest impact as a pitcher with an 8-2 record, 1.64 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 80 strikeouts as a sophomore.

As a catcher, he batted .345 with a .429 on-base percentage after earning 40 hits and 29 RBI.

Casen Fields secured an Honorable Mention as a utility player with a .405 batting average and 1.113 OPS thanks to 26 RBI, 50 runs, 49 hits, seven doubles and five home runs. He was also 31-for-32 on stolen-base attempts.

In addition to Hughes’ selection for Chelsea, his fellow senior Paxton Stallings received an Honorable Mention as a utility player. Stallings was a shutdown arm down the stretch and earned 52 strikeouts against 15 earned runs and 14 walks in 49 innings.

As a third baseman, he turned in a .909 fielding percentage with a .416 slugging percentage, .426 on-base percentage, 29 RBI, 24 runs and 26 hits, including seven doubles and three home runs.

Thompson had three selections in Class 7A, including Wyatt Williams, Ma’Kale Holden and Anderson Harris.

Williams was selected to the All-State First Team as an infielder for his excellence at the plate. The junior Alabama commit tied for the county-high in batting average with .450 and earned a .494 on-base percentage, 68 RBI, 63 hits and .764 slugging percentage for a 1.258 OPS.

He also pitched and went for a 1.50 ERA, 0.95 WHIP  and 86 strikeouts against 12 earned runs and 23 walks.

Thompson’s other Alabama commit Ma’Kale Holden joined him as a utility selection to the All-State First Team. Holden was a two-way threat as a pitcher and designated hitter, earning a .324 average at the plate with a .513 on-base percentage, 31 runs, 31 RBI, 34 hits and five home runs.

On the mound, he finished with a 2.04 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 78 strikeouts over the course of 55 innings and a 5-2 record.

Briarwood freshman Ivan Hand’s standout season on the mound led to a Class 5A All-State Second Team selection. Over the course of a perfect 8-0 record, he earned a 1.46 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 52 strikeouts against just 10 earned runs and 14 walks in 48 innings.

Helena outfielder Jarret Scott received an Honorable Mention in Class 6A as a designated hitter. He finished with 10 doubles and three triples off 38 hits and earned a .322 average, .456 on-base percentage and .458 slugging percentage.

Indian Springs outfielder Dylan Heald received an Honorable Mention as part of the Class 4A All-State lineup. Heald won the county’s batting title with a .537 batting average while earning 21 RBI, 20 runs and 29 hits with five doubles and 16 stolen bases in 54 plate appearances.

Coosa Valley received two Honorable Mentions after its semifinal run thanks to Brett Hackett and Sam Setzer.

The catcher Hackett earned a .390 average, .589 on-base percentage, .720 slugging percentage and a whopping 1.308 OPS thanks to his 34 RBI and 38 runs off 32 hits, including 13 doubles and four home runs.

Setzer secured an infield selection after the shortstop racked up 48 hits, 45 runs and 33 RBI for eight doubles, six triples and four home runs. He finished with a .429 batting average, .484 on-base percentage, .714 slugging percentage and 1.198 OPS.

The Mr. Baseball award and Super All-State teams will be named at the ASWA convention on Sunday, June 8 at Jacksonville State University.
