Memorial Day is a holiday often overlooked in the yearly calendar. Many view it as the official start of summer, the perfect time to fire up the grill and take a dip into your neighborhood pool. The solemn remembrance the holiday also offers is a welcome addition, but many choose to focus on the bright weather rather than a day of honor.

That is why the Alabama National Cemetery’s annual Memorial Day observance, which this year began on Thursday, May 22 and culminated with a ceremony on Monday, May 26, is so impactful.

Everything about the ceremony was intentional, from the people selected to speak, the music selection and the involvement of various military personnel. No detail from the ceremonies was overlooked, with more than 11,000 flags adorning the cemetery placed throughout the week.

“Freedom is not free, and we owe a debt of honor to both the heroes who sacrificed their lives to win and maintain our freedom and to their families for their sacrifice,” said Eldon Woodie, the chairman of the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery.

It has been encouraging to see Shelby County honor and respect Memorial Day this year rather than simply viewing it as the beginning of summer. Places like the Alabama National Cemetery and the American Village, who also held an elaborate Memorial Day celebration, authentically honored the traditions of Memorial Day, making the day special for visitors and veterans alike.

With many businesses closed and weekend excursions galore, we’re grateful that many residents chose instead to take the time to remember the sacrifices made by U.S. military personnel this past Memorial Day. Just like the men and women who served, Memorial Day should not be overlooked or forgotten.
