MONTEVALLO – The American Village is planning two separate summer events, both held in June, that seek to honor America and its rich history.
The Montevallo landmark is set to commemorate Flag Day on Saturday, June 14 and recognize the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill on Tuesday, June 17. The American Village will also celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Army on Saturday, June 14, with the birthday celebrations of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps coming later in the year.
The Flag Day celebration will feature a day full of family-friendly events, with the Cahaba Valley Elks presenting a special Flag Day ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. The group Homeland will provide patriotic music at the event as well.
America’s historical flags—the Pine Tree flag, Gadsden flag, Grand Union flag, 13-star flag, Star Spangled Banner, 20/48/50-star flags and the POW/MIA flags—will be presented, along with the U.S. Armed Forces flags.
The American Village will provide historical reenactments from famous patriots of the past throughout the day, a custom of the Montevallo landmark.
Following the Flag Day event, the Battle of Bunker Hill commemoration will focus on one of the most pivotal early engagements of the American Revolutionary War. The battle was a tactical victory for the British, but they suffered heavy casualties, highlighting the strength of the colonial resistance.
Guests are invited to gather at this living-history venue to reflect on the bravery, sacrifice and enduring legacy of the patriots who stood their ground in one of the American Revolution’s earliest and most symbolic battles.
The event will feature special vignettes and performances, including a Bunker Hill encampment. History experts Val Crofts, chief historian at American Village, and Dr. Jim Day from the University of Montevallo will offer their insights on this pivotal battle.
