MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo City Council gathered on Tuesday, May 27 at City Hall to conduct its regularly scheduled meeting, where members voted on infrastructure upgrades and reviewed ordinances related to the upcoming municipal election.
The council unanimously approved a bid from Active Air for the replacement of three aging air conditioning units at Parnell Memorial Library. The project, which comes at a cost of $79,873, will be funded from the city’s Regions Reserve Capital account.
The council then reviewed and approved an ordinance that sets the qualification fee for Montevallo’s upcoming municipal election at $50 for both city council candidates and mayoral candidates. The municipal election is scheduled for Aug. 26 with a runoff, if needed, on Sept. 23.
An ordinance authorizing the city to convey municipal property no longer needed for public use to the Montevallo Water and Sewer Board was approved by the council. The property transfer is intended to support infrastructure needs and long-term utility planning.
Before the council meeting at the work session, Kirk Hamby, the city’s director of public works, outlined how the recent adverse weather in Shelby County has affected Montevallo.
“We’ve had several rounds of storms in the last two weeks, with probably more coming,” Hamby said. “We’ve seen some short-term flooding, a few downed trees and some power outages.”
It was also announced during the work session that the Montevallo Junior City Council is looking for three new members, with membership available to rising eighth graders through rising 12th graders.
The next Montevallo City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 9 at City Hall.
