CALERA – Longtime Calera resident Heather Edwards announced her candidacy for Calera mayor on Thursday, June 5.
“After much prayer, thought and encouragement from friends and family, I’m excited to officially announce my candidacy for mayor of Calera,” read an official Facebook post by Edwards.
Edwards has lived in the city of Calera for more than 25 years and has raised three daughters in the community alongside her husband, who is a lifelong resident.
“This city isn’t just where I live; it’s my home,” Edwards said. “I’m not a politician. I’m a mom, a wife, a neighbor and a woman who genuinely cares about the future of our city.”
Edwards shared that she has served in different areas of the community and believes that the hands-on experiences have given her an understanding of what matters most to the city’s residents.
“I’m just a concerned citizen who’s ready to step up, speak out and do the hard work,” Edwards said.
Edwards cited the decisions made by current leadership as a factor in her decision to run for mayor.
“I’m running because I’m tired of decisions being made by the same small circle while real needs go unmet,” she said. “If you’re ready for someone who will truly listen and fight for this community, I’m ready to serve. Let’s build a stronger Calera—together.”
Edwards campaign is built off of several goals and values which include the following:
- Building a stronger sense of community, where neighbors feel connected and supported
- Putting first responders first—ensuring they have the tools and resources needed
- Supporting smart, thoughtful growth that allows families to grow into homes in Calera, instead of having to leave for neighboring communities
- Championing small businesses, which serve as the backbone of the local economy and the heartbeat of the city
Edwards will be running against incumbent Mayor Jon Graham who has served the city since he was first elected in 2008. Current Calera City Council member Kenny Dale Cost has also announced his candidacy for mayor of the city of Calera.
Municipal elections for the city of Calera will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
