ALABASTER – Grant Humphries will now serve as the new chief of police for the Alabaster Police Department after he was approved by the Alabaster City Council during a meeting on Monday, June 9.
Humphries has more than two decades of experience as a law enforcement professional and previously held the rank of captain before his promotion to chief.
“I greatly appreciate the support of the mayor, City Council, APD officers and community and look forward to continuing to make the Alabaster Police Department one of the best law enforcement agencies in the southeast,” Humphries said. “We are dedicated to ensuring Alabaster remains a safe and welcoming community for residents, businesses and visitors.”
Humphries first started his career with the Alabaster Police Department in 2004 as a patrol officer and was promoted to the ranks of detective in 2007, sergeant in 2012, lieutenant in 2016 and captain in 2018. He also served as the commander of the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force from 2012-2018.
Humphries has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is certified by the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2018.
Humphries’ appointment comes after APD Chief of Police Curtis Rigney officially retired on May 31. Rigney served as the city’s police chief for more than 30 years and oversaw the department’s continued growth and the recent completion of the new Alabaster Police Station on Highway 119.
The city of Alabaster first began its search for a new chief of police after approving an agreement with Center for Public Safety Management LLC to aid in interviews, assessment and evaluations in February. The City Council then began accepting applications for the role until April 7. The listing for the position listed the responsibilities of the role with a suggested salary in the range of $109,449.60 to $151,507.20.
After undergoing a coordinated process of interviews, the Alabaster City Council approved Humphries appointment during a regularly scheduled meeting on June 9.
Mayor Scott Brakefield expressed his approval of the choice and shared that he was excited about the future of the department under Humphries’ leadership.
“Grant has many years of dedicated service to Alabaster and its residents and was the clear choice to lead the department moving forward,” Brakefield said. “I’m so excited to see the department continue to thrive under his leadership.”
