MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo City Council held a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 9, addressing a variety of ordinances aimed at improving the city.
The meeting saw the council approve a new sign or Fire Station No. 2, along with an ordinance to exempt certain covered items from the Municipal Sales and Use Tax during the third full weekend of July 2025.
During the work session, which began at 5:30 p.m., council members presented reports from the various committees they oversee, including Public Health and Safety, Sustainability, Recreation and Community Development, Education and Arts and Finance and Economic Development.
Mayor Rusty Nix took the time to acknowledge Kirk Hamby, the city’s director of public works, for his work in managing the recent spate of storms that hit Montevallo and Shelby County as a whole.
“I wanted to give Kirk and his crew a shout-out for getting all the trees and debris cleared,” Nix said. “I think within 12-18 hours, we had power back in Montevallo… Y’all did an outstanding job.”
Marissa Wilson, the director of the Parnell Memorial Library, outlined the summer season for the library and said that it is packed with events for all ages.
“We had over 3,100 visits to the building (last month), lots of preparation for our summer programs,” Wilson said. “Summer reading has started, and Friday, June 6 was our big kickoff.”
