HOOVER – Steve Lawrence, a Hoover resident since 1974 and experienced business professional with a 28-year career in risk management and commercial insurance, has officially announced his candidacy for Hoover City Council, Place 5.

Lawrence said he is driven by a deep love for the success of Hoover with the conviction that Hoover deserves thoughtful, transparent leadership. Lawrence shared that he is committed to fiscal responsibility, community engagement and practical problem-solving.

“I’m not running for City Council because I’m a politician, I’m running because I care,” Lawrence said. “I’ve watched too many decisions get made in haste, without full transparency and with little regard for their long-term impact on our families and future. It’s time for change.”

Lawrence said he brings a unique skill to the role that is shaped by decades of solving complex problems for businesses across the country. Having been raised in a family of engineers and thrived in a career built on communication and analysis, he has developed skills in strategic thinking and practical execution.

Throughout his campaign, Lawrence will focus on key issues impacting Hoover residents, including:

  • Restoring fiscal discipline: With Hoover experiencing record revenue, spending, and debt in recent years, Lawrence aims to ensure every taxpayer dollar is spent wisely, with full transparency and accountability
  • Supporting public safety: As a firm advocate for Hoover’s police and fire departments, Lawrence pledged to prioritize resources and respect for those who protect the city daily
  • Protecting education: With personal ties to local schools—his daughter currently attends Hoover High—Lawrence aims to support strong leadership and oversight in appointments to the board of education
  • Community-centered governance: Lawrence shared that he promises to listen first, ask the hard questions and attend every City Council meeting and planning session with diligence

Born in Minnesota and raised in Hoover, Lawrence and his wife, April, have been married nearly 25 years. They are active members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church and are parents of three children, including two college students and one Hoover High School student.

Lawrence’s campaign slogan is, “Protecting What Works. Improving What Matters” and aims to reflect his respect for the city’s legacy and dedication to improving what’s next for Hoover.

“I’m proud of where Hoover has been, but I’m even more hopeful for where we can go,” Lawrence said. “That’s why I’m running, to serve with purpose, to ask the right questions and to fight for the kind of leadership our city deserves.”
