PELHAM – One of Pelham’s most beloved summer traditions is returning to Oak Mountain State Park as Fire on the Water lights up the skies above Double Oak Lake on Thursday, July 3.

The annual Fourth of July celebration, hosted in partnership between the city of Pelham and Oak Mountain State Park, is set to draw thousands for a full day of outdoor fun, food and one of the most breathtaking fireworks displays in the region.

“Fire on the Water was first held in Oak Mountain State Park in 2014,” said Anna Jones, events coordinator with the park. “We’ve loved hosting the event each year since, except for a break during the pandemic and we cannot wait for this year’s event.”

With its scenic setting and strong community spirit, Fire on the Water has become more than just a fireworks show—it’s a celebration of summer, family and Pelham pride. Attendees can enjoy a full day of recreation, from swimming and paddleboarding in Double Oak Lake to hiking, playing volleyball and exploring the park’s Treetop Nature Trail.

“Besides being an incredible fireworks show, two things make Fire on the Water truly unique,” Jones said. “First, it’s location, location, location. During the show, you see the stunning colors in the sky and their beauty reflected in the water below. Guests can relax on our sandy beach or cool off with a swim in the lake before the show begins.”

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., but the celebration kicks off much earlier. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site starting at 4 p.m., and guests are welcome to bring coolers, chairs and blankets. Picnic tables and grills will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Alcohol is not permitted.

Pelham City Manager Gretchen DiFante said the event has become a hallmark of summer for families across the Birmingham area.

“Since Fire on the Water is held at the state park, it attracts attendees from all over the region,” DiFante said. “Each year, fireworks are set off over the water, creating a display of repeat images that is truly amazing to watch.”

The event is the result of a long-standing partnership between the city of Pelham and Oak Mountain State Park. The city provides public safety support and funds the fireworks display, while the park oversees planning, operations and covers remaining costs. Both groups collaborate on promotion.

“This partnership allows Pelham to host an Independence Day celebration that draws more visitors than we could accommodate on our own,” DiFante said. “It also gives them a great reason to explore the recreational amenities our city has to offer.”

The collaboration also benefits the state park financially.

“Alabama State Parks operate on a user-pay system,” Jones explained. “Fire on the Water is one of our biggest revenue generators of the year, and that funding is crucial to our efforts to protect, maintain and preserve the park for generations to come.”

To ensure a smooth experience, park entry and traffic flow are structured throughout the day:

– Annual Pass Holders: Entry allowed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

– Standard Admission (before 4 p.m.): Regular park rates apply

– Special Event Admission (after 4 p.m.): Pelham Residents: $10 per vehicle (with proof of residency), Non-Residents: $15 per vehicle.

All park gates will close at 7 p.m. ahead of the 9 p.m. fireworks display.

Support from Pelham Police and Fire Departments, Oak Mountain Park Rangers and DCNR Game Wardens will help ensure the safety and enjoyment of all guests. Certain trails, including the Lake Trail leading to the dam, will be closed throughout the day.
