COLUMBIANA – At a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, June 26, the Shelby County Schools Board of Education named Wendy Cespedes the new principal of Oak Mountain Elementary School.

Cespedes, who previously served as the principal of Montevallo Elementary School, has more than a decade of education experience. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Science in Education Leadership from the American College of Education.

“She is committed to building strong relationships while nurturing a supportive, inspiring environment for students, staff and families,” Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks said of Cespedes.

Having spent the entirety of her educational career in Shelby County, Cespedes holds the area in high regard and is appreciative of the time she has spent in its schools.

“It is a privilege to have worked in Shelby County for my entire professional career,” Cespedes said. “It is truly the best district in the state.”

Although she is looking forward to the next chapter of her career, Cespedes made sure to give Montevallo her gratitude.

“I thank you for the opportunity to serve the Montevallo community, first of all,” Cespedes said. “It has been a true honor, and a piece of my heart will always remain in Montevallo. I had the pleasure of working alongside some incredible people and collaborating with the University (of Montevallo).”

As Cespedes prepares to begin her new journey at Oak Mountain Elementary, she acknowledged the work of her predecessor, veteran educator Jan Curtis.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue my journey at Oak Mountain Elementary,” Cespedes said. “I know Mrs. (Jan) Curtis has left a legacy of excellence, and I’m eager to carry that excellence forward as I serve the students, staff and families there.”

In other news, the board honored its transportation department. Rick Vines was recognized as the Alabama Schools Transportation Supervisor of the Year and Wanda Adams was named Secretary of the Year by the Alabama Schools Transportation Association.

“I’m so proud of both of them and their service, but I also want to recognize the entire transportation department,” Brooks said.

The board will reconvene for a special-called meeting on Thursday, July 3 at noon at the Central Office in Columbiana.
