NORTH SHELBY – Jefferson State Community College has announced the hiring of a new men’s golf coach—Corbett Phinney.
An Air Force veteran, Phinney is a professional at Bent Brook Golf Course—the team’s home course—and was previously a professional in Georgia, where he coached the Professional Golf Association Junior League.
“Coach Corbett played golf in high school and college, and he was quite helpful at the NJCAA Women’s District Tournament this year,” Jefferson State Athletic Director Jacob Call said. “We’re excited to see where he takes us.”
Phinney expressed his excitement about what the position will bring, as the sport has been a constant throughout his entire life ever since he picked up a golf club at a young age.
“I am honored and extremely excited to accept the position as head golf coach at Jefferson State Community College,” Phinney said. “”I’ve been playing golf since I was 3 years old, and the game has been a constant passion throughout my life. The opportunity to lead this program is both a privilege and a responsibility I embrace with great enthusiasm.”
Phinney discussed how the opportunity standing in front of him at JSCC is a chance for him to build his golfers into both better athletes and men for the future, something that he takes pride in each time he helps a golfer out.
“My coaching philosophy is rooted in excellence—both on and off the course,” Phinney said. “While I’m highly competitive and driven to win, I believe the true measure of success lies in the growth of the young men I coach. My goal is to help shape them into not only outstanding athletes, but also strong leaders, husbands, fathers and contributors to their communities. I look forward to building a program that reflects the values of Jefferson State and inspires pride in our players, their families and the campus community.”
Ten golfers are expected for the Pioneers in the fall, all from the state of Alabama. New golfers are from Birmingham, Jacksonville, Leeds, Pelham and Smiths Station.
The fall schedule will include competitions hosted by several Alabama community colleges—a tournament hosted by Jefferson State on Nov. 2-4 at Musgrove Country Club in Jasper and a trip to Windance Country Club in Gulfport, Mississippi.
