ALABASTER – With the qualifying period over, the candidates for the Alabaster City Council and city mayor have been set for this year’s Municipal Election on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The qualifying period for candidates running for Alabaster City Council or mayoral office ended on Tuesday, June 24, which allowed candidates to fill out the necessary paperwork to secure a spot on the ballot.

The office of mayor will see two candidates on the ballot competing as incumbent mayor Scott Brakefield runs for reelection to a second term and resident Yoko Brown challenges him for the position.

Representative for Ward 1 on the Alabaster City Council will be a highly-contested seat after incumbent Sophie Martin announced her intentions to not seek reelection to the position. The ballot will feature pastor and business owner Gerry J. Bivins, Alabaster Government Academy graduate Angel Evans and Alabaster Downtown Redevelopment Authority Chairman Mike Myers vying for the role.

Alabaster City Councilperson Zach Zahariadis is seeking election as representative for Ward 6 after being appointed to the role in 2022 to replace Seth Gandy after his resignation. Zahariadis will be facing off against Jamia Alexander James, a former Alabaster Board of Education member, on the ballot.

After no additional candidates qualified for positions, the following incumbents will be declared elected to their respective seats on the Alabaster City Council during the next meeting on Monday, July 14:

  • Ward 2 Councilperson Rick Ellis
  • Ward 3 Councilperson Stacy Rakestraw
  • Ward 4 Councilperson Greg Farrell
  • Ward 5 Councilperson Jamie Cole
  • Ward 7 Councilperson Kerri Pate

The Alabaster Municipal Election is set for Aug. 26 and voting for the election for Alabaster residents will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the former Restore building off of Highway 119.

The newly elected candidates from the Municipal Election will take office on the first Monday in November following the election and the first organizational session for the new council will take place on Monday, Nov. 3.
