Brian “Fat Dog” Buchanan, 67, of Harpersville, passed away on June 27, 2025.

Dog was born on October 4, 1957 to his mother, Dorothy “Mawmaw Dot” Inez Buchanan, and his father, Robert “Pawpaw Buck” Ishmael Buchanan in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Dog lived life at full throttle. His love for fixing up cars and bikes always had him working on something. His shop was always full of car parts, DIY projects, and music like Creedence Clearwater Revival or Marc Bouchard.

He spent his career as a Millwright, but his true love was always his family and friends. His retirement gave him more time to drop by for surprise visits with friends, grill up good food for his family, spend time with his grandchildren, and love on his dogs, Barney and Sadie.

Dog is preceeded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Michael Buchanan, and his sister, Sherry Buchanan.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Kelley Buchanan, his brothers, Jim Buchanan and Pat Buchanan, his sons, Adam Buchanan (Ashley), and Alex Buchanan (Danielle), his grandchildren, Laynee, Connor, and Avery Buchanan, his stepchildren, Meghan Joiner (Joey), Amelia Mathis, and Jeffery Emerick (Bethany), and his step-grandchildren, Michael Harry (Jenny and Dante), Makayla Baker, Jasmine Joiner, Aubrey Baker, and Jocelyn Mathis.

The Celebration of Life for Brian Buchanan will be at Providence Baptist Church in Harpersville on Friday, July 4th, 5-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Shelby County Humane Society in memory of Dog and in honor of his dog Barney.
