Summer is upon us, meaning kids are out of school and have more time on their hands. How they choose to spend that time can make a significant difference in their mental and physical health.
It is not nearly as common to see kids hanging out with all their friends in whoever’s yard is the biggest as it used to be. Seeing a kid on a bike, much less a large assortment of bikes laying in a yard, seems unheard of in today’s world.
Using an electronic device or playing video games appears to be much more appealing to today’s youth, calling into question the negative impacts of today’s increasingly digital world.
Now more than ever, encouraging kids to play outside, and providing them a safe place to do so, is vital. Studies show that kids who spend time outside are more likely to have improved physical health, enhanced cognitive and social skills and reduced stress and anxiety.
It is not just about the youth, however. Adults are spending less time outdoors, enabling these bad habits to spread. While laying on the couch and scrolling through TikTok or watching Instagram Reels can sound appealing after a long day of work, finding ways to incorporate fresh air into your daily routine has far more benefits than sitting around staring at a screen.
Playing golf, riding a bike, going for a walk or run, swimming, hiking and fishing are just a few examples of outdoor activities that can be enjoyable for people of all ages.
With the United States facing more and more health issues, teaching the next generation the importance of touching grass has never been more important. It starts with adults, however, as they must set an example for children to follow.
