MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo has once again been recognized among the nation’s top institutions for its commitment to engaged, high-impact education. For the 14th consecutive year, UM has been named a College of Distinction for the 2025-2026 academic year, earning additional honors as an Alabama College of Distinction, a Public University College of Distinction and for several of its standout academic programs and student support services.

The College of Distinction designation highlights institutions that go beyond traditional academic rankings to provide students with meaningful, real-world learning experiences. Rather than focusing on test scores or prestige, the honor recognizes schools that excel in four key areas: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

“Pursuant to our mission, the University of Montevallo provides students a premier experience where strong emphasis is placed on developing cross-domain skills such as oral and written communication, critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork, professionalism and work ethic,” said Dr. Courtney Bentley, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at UM. “These skills are grounded in both academic and professional knowledge through experiential opportunities that render UM students uniquely prepared for what lies before and ahead of them.”

In addition to the university-wide recognitions, UM received specific accolades for:

– The Michael E. Stephens College of Business

– The College of Education and Human Development

– Career development initiatives that support undergraduate success

– Its commitment to military-related students and employees

“Montevallo has crafted a campus culture where students are empowered to take ownership of their learning,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction. “Its programs reflect the kind of innovation and intentionality that prepare students for life after graduation.”

Colleges of Distinction has been honoring institutions across the U.S. since 2000, spotlighting colleges that foster engaged learning environments and prioritize student growth. UM’s ongoing recognition reflects its mission to not only educate students, but also to prepare them for personal and professional success long after graduation.
