COLUMBIANA – Live music echoed from the stage on the football field of Shelby County High School as children ran around playing with glow sticks before enjoying an electrifying fireworks spectacle at the conclusion of Columbiana’s annual Liberty Day celebration.
The city of Columbiana held its 39th annual Liberty Day celebration on Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28 with a selection of activities for families to enjoy on Columbiana Main Street and Old Mill Square Park.
“I think it went very well,” Columbiana Mayor David Mitchell said. “We do these things to benefit the people in Columbiana. It’s a great celebration.”
According to the city, Columbiana’s typical daytime population is around 7,000 people and during Liberty Day, the city saw nearly 31,000 people come through the town.
“You guys are incredible, and we appreciate you spending your weekend with us,” read an official Facebook post by the official Liberty Day Festival Facebook page.
Over the last 39 years, Columbiana’s annual Liberty Day has evolved from a small celebration of the Statue of Liberty into a two-day family event that serves as the biggest event of the year in Columbiana with members from across the community participating.
“Our goal is always to bring people to Columbiana,” Payne said. “We are out of the way. We are not somewhere that you pass through, so you have to be intentional about coming to Columbiana. We want people to be intentional and come for evens and then come back and shop and maybe even become part of our community.”
The Liberty Day festivities kicked off on June 27 at 5 p.m. with the live music from the Official Clutch Band on the Faulkner Industrial Main Street Stage at. 6 p.m. The Heather Hayes Experience closed out the first night with a performance around 7:30 p.m.
Saturday’s activities started off with the fifth annual Liberty Day 5K at 8 a.m. in Old Mill Square Park which saw 244 registered runners raise approximately $5,000 for Columbiana Main Street.
Afterward, residents and visitors enjoyed a selection of food trucks, vendors and live music on the Old Mill Square Stage and Faulkner Industrial Main Street stage.
“I was really pleased,” Mitchell said. “I think we had a lot of neat events, we had a good entertainment piece (and) I think it was a great success.”
The annual Liberty Day Parade took place at 2 p.m. with a host of participants traveling down Columbiana Main Street, including the Pride of Shelby County Marching Band, political candidates, first responders and this year’s grand marshal Frank C. “Butch” Ellis.
From 8-9:30 p.m., headliner Easton Corbin rocked the stage and serenaded the crowd with a series of tunes. The Liberty Day festivities closed out with a bang as the annual fireworks display took to the sky near Shelby County High School’s football stadium at 9:30 p.m. and lasted approximately 20 minutes.
“The fireworks were spectacular, as always,” Mitchell said.
