MONTEVALLO – After years of discussion, planning and persistence, the city of Montevallo is officially set to welcome a new hotel to its downtown. City leaders, community partners and developers gathered on Thursday, Sept. 18, to break ground on the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites, a 54-room property that will rise at the corner of Main and Shelby streets.
The Montevallo Planning and Zoning Commission later unanimously approved the site development plan that evening, clearing the way for construction to begin.
“They say that patience is a virtue. If that is true, then perseverance and dedication are its allies,” Montevallo city clerk and treasurer Steve Gilbert said at the groundbreaking. “It has taken all three of those attributes to bring us to this day. Projects such as this often have a long journey before coming to fruition, and today marks the beginning of construction of the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites in downtown Montevallo.”
Mayor Rusty Nix described the hotel as a long-awaited addition that will bring both economic growth and convenience for visitors.
“Today’s a big day for Montevallo. When I woke up this morning, I had butterflies,” Nix said. “A hotel in Montevallo has been in the works since the early 2000s. Now, we finally get to make it happen. Having a Cobblestone Hotel & Suites on Main Street will be a game changer for our town.”
The new hotel will include amenities such as hot breakfast, high-speed internet, a swimming pool, meeting areas, a business center and a conference room. Cobblestone Hotels specializes in building smaller, upper-midscale properties in communities not typically served by larger chains.
Chad Scroggins, Shelby County manager, noted that the project has been a long-time goal for multiple partners, including the University of Montevallo, Shelby County, the Montevallo Development Cooperative District and 58 Inc.
“On behalf of the county, we’re excited about being a partner in this,” Scroggins said. “We’ll be actively recruiting other events to make sure the hotel is viable for a long period of time through our tourism efforts and Discover Shelby. We welcome this day, and I’m glad to finally see it.”
The site at 555 Main Street, previously home to Victory Autos & Collision Center, has seen multiple redevelopment proposals over the years. This project, officials said, will not only fill a long-standing need for lodging in Montevallo but also strengthen the city’s growing reputation as a destination.
“Having a new hotel is super exciting for all of the events we host in Montevallo,” said Kendall Williams, Shelby County’s manager of tourism and events. “With the university center for the arts, the new mountain bike course and American Village, having a hotel right there in Montevallo will make the visitor experience even better.”
Developers said the hotel will be designed to complement the architectural character of Main Street, further supporting the revitalization of downtown.
“This will produce jobs for our citizens, plus provide an uptick in revenue for business owners,” Nix said. “With all the events that we have in town, we now have a place where people can stay in Montevallo instead of sending our lodging tax revenue to neighboring cities.”
Groundbreaking marked a milestone that city leaders said was years in the making, but also just the beginning. Construction is set to begin soon, with the hotel aiming for a late 2026 or early 2027 opening.
