PELHAM – Chris Townes will join the Pelham City Council after winning the Place 3 runoff election on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Townes said the victory was the result of months of grassroots work, including countless evenings spent with her family knocking on doors across the city.
“Getting elected is just exhilarating,” Townes said. “Conservatively, we’ve knocked on 1,600 doors. It was after work, with my kids, with my family and we all worked our butts off. It’s exhilarating to know that those hours produced fruit.”
Townes admitted she was nervous heading into election night, unsure of whether her efforts would pay off.
“I was wondering if my hard work paid off, and it did,” she said.
Looking ahead, Townes said her first step on the council will be to assess the city’s current needs while supporting Pelham’s new mayor, Rick Wash.
“Once I take office, I want to get a lay of the land,” Townes said. “We have to be sure of where Pelham stands and make sure that Rick Wash has all the support he needs as he takes the mayoral seat.”
Townes emphasized her desire for a unified council that works with intention and avoids the conflicts of the past.
“The last few years, the Pelham City Council has been full of division; we don’t need any of that,” she said. “We need to be a unified body that puts God first.”
As she celebrated the win, Townes thanked the voters who supported her through both rounds of the election.
“I just want to thank every supporter for taking the time to come out, for a second time, and for trusting me with their vote,” Townes said. “I want to do right by the city of Pelham.”
