MONTEVALLO – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has appointed University of Montevallo alum Alana Hataway Barranco ’06, M.Ed. ’10 to the school’s Board of Trustees.

Barranco’s term began Wednesday, Sept. 17 and will run through Jan. 19, 2032. She replaces Hon. Trustee Todd Strange.

“The University was instrumental in shaping my personal and professional development, so serving as a Trustee is a meaningful way to contribute to an institution that has played a pivotal role in my life,” Barranco said.

Barranco earned both her bachelor’s degree in business administration and management (2006) and her master’s degree in clinical mental health (2010) from UM. She now serves as a high school and college counselor at Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School, where she has guided students and families through the college admission process, career exploration and academic planning for the past eight years.

Her professional career began at UM in 2006, when she worked as coordinator of student life programs, advising the Student Government Association, Greek Life, intramural sports and other student organizations. After completing her master’s degree, she joined the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office in 2010, counseling first-time, non-violent felony offenders in a restorative justice program. She later served as a consultant for the Center for Government at Auburn University at Montgomery from 2010 to 2017.

As a student at Montevallo, Barranco was deeply involved in campus life. She served as SGA president, held offices in Alpha Gamma Delta, worked as an Orientation Leader and was a member of the Purple Side cabinet during three College Night seasons. She was named Ms. Montevallo in 2006, Greek Woman of the Year in both 2004 and 2005 and received the Alpha Gamma Delta Leadership Award. She was also honored as Most Outstanding House Speaker at the YMCA Collegiate Legislature.
