HOMEWOOD – Montevallo came out of its bye week looking to build on the progress from its last game, but John Carroll Catholic proved too much on Friday, Sept. 26, as the Cavaliers defeated the Bulldogs 47-7.
The Cavs struck quickly off a fumbled kickoff return to open the night, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the game. Another rushing score extended the lead to 13-0 by the end of the first quarter.
John Carroll added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter—a 38-yard pass and an 8-yard run—to stretch the margin to 26-0 at halftime.
The Bulldogs got on the board midway through the third quarter when junior quarterback Jordan McCary broke free for a 35-yard rushing touchdown. That capped a 54-yard night on the ground for McCary, who also threw for 75 yards on 7-of-18 passing.
Senior running back Caleb Meriweather added 63 yards on 10 carries to pace Montevallo’s ground game, while sophomore Marquel Jackson led the receivers with four catches for 63 yards.
John Carroll quickly responded to McCary’s score with another rushing touchdown, and the Cavs added two more in the fourth quarter, one on the ground and one through the air, to close out the 47-7 final.
On defense, Jackson Holsomback led the Bulldogs with nine tackles, followed by Demarious Gentry with eight and Jackson with six. AJ Guizar added five tackles on the line.
With the loss, Montevallo fell to 1-4 on the season. The Bulldogs will return to region play on Friday, Oct. 3, with a trip to Selma. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
