HOOVER – Thanks to another dominant win in area play, the Spain Park Jaguars have officially wrapped up the top spot in the regular-season standings of Class 6A, Area 8.
Spain Park defeated the Helena Huskies in a 3-0 sweep on Thursday, Sept. 25 at Jag Arena to move to 5-0 in area play.
The win clinched the regular-season area title for the Jags, and they will now host the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament. The single-day, four-team tournament will take place sometime between Oct. 14 and 16 at Jag Arena, with a specific date, start times and matchups to be announced later.
In the matchup of the HeffStrong Gold Bracket winner in Spain Park and the Silver Bracket champion in Helena, the Huskies looked to make a statement early with a close score line in the first set.
However, the Jags kept their county foe at an arm’s length to take control of the match early on. Spain Park won the first set by a score of 25-19 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
That was only the start of more success to come as the Jags rolled from there.
Spain Park’s offense took control in the second set and established a double-digit lead before long. The Jags carried that advantage through the final stretch and put the finishing touches on a 25-11 victory in the second set.
That put Spain Park up 2-0 in the match and with a chance to finish its fourth-straight area sweep.
The Jags capitalized on their momentum to earn the victory in over the Huskies thanks to another strong performance in the third set. In the end, Spain Park walked away with the 3-0 sweep thanks to the 25-15 third-set victory.
Bea Wiggins led the Jags offense with 11 kills off a +.162 hitting percentage. Chloe Shumate secured five kills with a +.375 hitting percentage while Peyton Harrington, Ja’niyah Mosley and Ayu Sudarsana each finished with four kills apiece. Cailyn Kyes directed the offense with 26 assists.
The Jags had 10 aces in the match, including four from Wiggins and two apiece from Camdyn Kyes and Madden Scott.
Over on defense, Shumate and Harrington had three total blocks each, and Mosley assisted on two blocks. Camdyn Kyes finished with a team-high 21 digs while Harrington and Cailyn Kyes each got into double figures with 16 and 13 digs, respectively. Wiggins earned nine digs and Scott had three digs.
Spain Park improved to 25-5 overall in addition to its 5-0 area mark. The Jags will look to finish area play with a perfect record when it faces the Pelham Panthers on the road on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.
Helena dropped to 15-13 overall and a 1-3 area record. The Huskies will continue area play on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. when they will host the Chelsea Hornets.
