VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets continued their recent domination of the Childersburg Tigers with their third win in the last four meetings of the local rivals.
Vincent secured the 40-15 victory on Sept. 26 at Harold Garrett Field to win its fourth-straight game in a non-region battle against Class 3A Childersburg.
“Proud of our guys for handling business tonight,” Vincent coach Lucas Weatherford said. “We have a brutal four-game region stretch coming up, so it’s time for us to see how good we really are.”
Vincent tried to strike early after an early three-and-out gave it prime field position, but two touchdowns were called back for penalties. It wouldn’t matter much as Wyatt Carlisle helped the Jackets take a 6-0 lead just past the midway mark in the first.
The defense came up with another punt to allow the offense to march down the field. Jayden Roberts finished the drive with a rushing touchdown and took Vincent into the second quarter with a 13-0 lead.
In a desperate move from Childersburg, the visitors went for it on fourth down near midfield but got stopped by a pack of Jackets. From there, Vincent tried for the double-pass to Zac Morehead, and while it was incomplete, a defensive pass interference moved the ball up.
Roberts punched in his second score before long, and that made it 19-0 with 6:52 left in the first half.
Another punt put the Jackets back in action, and Lane Mims went for the deep ball this time. Facing double coverage, Landon Archer tipped the pass to himself and scored his team’s first passing touchdown of the night. The ensuing 2-point conversion run by Mims made it 27-0 with 1:55 remaining in the second.
Despite time winding down, the Vincent defense came up with a quick stop to put the offense around midfield with 35 seconds left. Mims went for broke in the final seconds and found Roberts underneath the ball near the goal line.
Mims finished off the drive with a punch-in run as time expired, and the following extra point gave the Jackets a 34-0 lead at the halftime break.
Vincent began rotating players in the second half but still had a head full of momentum coming out of the locker room. Jay Posey reeled off a long run to get his team near the goal line, and he finished the job with a short scoring run to put the hosts up 40-0 with eight minutes left in the third.
The Jackets took their foot off the gas and let the younger players take the reins down the stretch. While Childersburg got a 45-yard touchdown with 11 minutes left and a late fourth-and-goal punch-in touchdown, Vincent’s commanding lead let it finish the 40-15 win.
Mims finished 8-of-12 passing for 131 yards and a touchdown, with his top target being Archer thanks to his 87 yards and a touchdown off five catches. Roberts finished with 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Carlisle had 55 receiving yards and a touchdown.
In all, the Vincent offense finished with 353 yards of total offense in the 25-point victory.
The Jackets improved to 4-1 on the season and extended their win streak to four in a row.
Now, Vincent will put its 2-0 region mark on the line against the No. 5 Tuscaloosa Academy Knights in a high-profile Class 2A, Region 5 showdown that will put the winner in the driver’s seat for the title. That game will take place on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. on the road at Tuscaloosa Academy.
