NORTH SHELBY – The Briarwood Christian Lions got back to winning ways in largely dominant fashion as they bounced back from a tri-match loss to Chelsea with a sweep of the McAdory Yellow Jackets.
Briarwood earned a 3-0 sweep over McAdory on Monday, Oct. 6 at Briarwood Christian School in the second-to-last regular-season five-set match for the Lions.
Briarwood started out the match in control as the hosts quickly took a double-digit lead over McAdory before snowballing it into a first-set win.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the match thanks to a 25-10 win in the first set.
The victory set the tone for the rest of the evening as Briarwood continued to remain in command during the second set. The Lions doubled up the Jackets’ point total for the second-straight set en route to another victory.
Briarwood won its second-consecutive set by a score of 25-10 to increase its lead in the match to a commanding 2-0.
However, McAdory would not go away easily and pushed the Lions to the brink in the third set. The teams were deadlocked at the end of the set at 24-24, and from there, they traded the next two points to extend the match even further.
From there, Briarwood avoided the prospect of a fourth set by taking back-to-back points. It led to a 27-25 third-set win and a 3-0 sweep in the matchup.
Julie Roberts led the offensive effort with 14 kills while also adding seven aces from the service line. Leighton Hendley nearly hit double figures with nine kills. Setter Noelle Suellentrop finished the match with 26 assists while leading the offense to the sweep.
The Lions are now 27-4 overall thanks to the win. They will have one last five-set match in the regular season against the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m., and it will be a chance to avenge one of their four regular-season losses.
Briarwood will then close out the regular season at ShrimpFest in Gulf Shores on Oct. 10 and 11.
