CHELSEA – The Spain Park Jaguars faced early adversity on the road against Class 6A, Region 3 county foe Chelsea, falling behind 7-0 after a fumbled punt was returned for a touchdown, but the response said it all on Friday night, Oct. 10.

Facing that early seven-point deficit in the first three minutes of the game, the Jags used that as added fuel to the fire, sparking 24 unanswered points to end the first half and ultimately 44 unanswered the rest of the way to pull away for a 44-7 region win over the Hornets.

“We said coming out, we said it all week, don’t panic. Sit there and keep swinging,” head coach Tim Vakakes said after the win. “We knew Chelsea was going to come out and play hard, and they did. We didn’t flinch. We work like heavyweights. I tell them all the time it’s what we do and who we are. I’m really proud that our kids handled tonight with composure the way that they did.”

It also marked a huge night for senior quarterback Brock Bradley, who became the winningest quarterback in school history with the win.

In the historic win, he totaled 394 yards and four touchdowns on 17-of-22 passing, putting together a flawless performance.

“We’re going to miss Brock Bradley, but we still have some juice left in the tank with him,” Vakakes said. “He’s special. He’s all the way class, his parents do a great job and he’s helped us change this program.”

With the win, Spain Park improved to 5-2 on the season, but more importantly 3-1 in region play to remain in second place in the region.

On the opening drive of the game, Chelsea did go three-and-out, but it looked as if the Hornets were starting a bizarre night when punter John Leith hustled down the field and saw the ball bounce right into his arms off a Kena Rego fumble.

He then sprinted to the house for a touchdown and 7-0 lead.

Spain Park, however, never panicked.

The Jags calmly marched down the field, and despite a drive that featured several penalties from both teams and a called-back touchdown, they eventually nailed a 27-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.

That score held up at the end of the opening quarter, but it didn’t last long into the second quarter, as the Jags scored their first of 21 unanswered shortly into the period.

After a Joe Cross interception kick started a new drive for the Jags late in the first quarter, Hudson Hibbard carried the ball into the end zone six seconds into the second quarter to give Spain Park the lead at 10-7.

The Jags then forced a three-and-out to quickly get the ball back, and the offense went right back to work.

It eventually led to a Jamarion Hallman touchdown catch off a Bradley pass on a crossing route to extend the Spain Park lead to 10 points at 17-7 midway through the second quarter.

Enter Connor Greb.

After the defense once again got the ball quickly back in the hands of the offense, the tight end had a big impact.

He was on the receiving end of a deep, 51-yard bomb from Bradley on third-and-long early in the drive. Then, he snagged a ball and held onto it with his finger tips for a 13-yard touchdown catch shortly after to make it 24-7 Spain Park at the half.

That was just the beginning, as Spain Park added 20 more points in the second half to pull away.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Jaguars picked up right where they left off in the first half, going on a nice drive that was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bradley to Mason McClure perfectly in the back corner of the end zone to make it 31-7.

Chelsea had two cracks at inching back into the game, but back-to-back turnovers on down, including one inside the 5-yard-line, prevented any thoughts of a comeback.

“I tell our kids, culture and leadership, being a man, it leaves clues behind,” Vakakes said, referencing the goal-line stand and the effort defensively all night. “That’s not going to show up in the paper, you’re not going to read about it, you’re not going to see it, but that’s the clue on what kind of culture our kids have.”

With the great defensive effort, the Jags’ offense closed out the night with two more scores in the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, shortly after a big pass pushed the ball down the field, Bradley avoided pressure and lobbed a ball high in the air toward the back right corner of the end zone where Jamarion Hallman jumped up, ripped it down and tapped one foot inbounds for a 38-7 lead.

With Bradley’s strong performance, it gave backup quarterback Nash Davis confidence to do the same.

With 3:45 left in the game and the Jags facing third-and-6, Davis hit McClure streaking down the middle of the field for a 60-yard touchdown pass that capped off the scoring at 44-7.

McClure finished with 149 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions in the win, while Greb added four catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Rego added 82 yards on three receptions.

Nic McKissic was also important in the win, totaling 110 yards on 17 carries.

“We’re starting to get healthy and keep getting better every week,” Vakakes said. “That’s been the message, to get ready every freaking week.”

Spain Park will now take on Calera and Chilton County the next two weeks to close out region play.
