ATMORE – The Cornerstone Christian Chargers’ unbeaten run came to an end on Friday night, Oct. 10, as Escambia Academy’s size and physicality proved too much in a 42-14 defeat on the road.

In a clash of Class A’s last remaining unbeatens, the Cougars (7-0) imposed their will from the opening series, using a bruising rushing attack and disciplined defense to hand Cornerstone (6-1) its first loss of the season.

Escambia’s Maddox Boyette and Ronta Watson combined for multiple touchdowns to power the Cougars’ offense. Boyette’s goal-line score early in the second quarter put Escambia ahead 12-0, and Watson’s explosive playmaking through both the air and ground helped the hosts extend the lead to 24-8 by halftime and 42-8 by the end of the third quarter.

Despite the lopsided score, Cornerstone showed flashes of the resilience that has defined its back-to-back state championship runs. The Chargers’ trademark rushing attack broke through midway through the second quarter for their first touchdown of the night, followed by a successful two-point conversion to trim the deficit to 18-8.

Cornerstone added one final touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 42-14, but the hole proved too deep to climb out of against an Escambia defense that held the Chargers to their lowest point total of the season.

Jackson Moore led the way for Cornerstone with 33 carries for 56 yards, while Jadon Dixon added 17 carries for 78 yards and TC Sanders contributed 5 carries for 8 yards.

Head coach James Lee’s team had averaged over 40 points per game entering the matchup, but Escambia’s front line clogged rushing lanes and forced Cornerstone to work from behind the sticks for much of the night.

The loss ends Cornerstone’s six-game winning streak and serves as a reality check in the middle of a tough stretch that also includes an upcoming matchup with unbeaten Macon-East.

Even so, the Chargers remain very much in the hunt for a top-two playoff seed in the AISA 8-Man division. With senior leaders like Moore, Dixon, Sanders and Malachi Adams anchoring both sides of the ball, Cornerstone will aim to regroup quickly and rediscover its rhythm.

The Chargers (6-1) will return home next Friday, Oct. 17, to host Macon-East in another pivotal matchup with playoff implications on the line.
