COLUMBIANA – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced that the Shelby County Jail received 100 percent compliance with the National Institute for Jail Operations audit.

Notice of the accreditation was received on Oct. 7. The National Institute for Jail Operations provides legal-based guidelines derived from case law to assist jails with compliance. Achieving compliance with these guidelines enhances operations, increases professionalism and protects against liability and risk management issues.

“Our jail deputies demonstrate the highest standard of professionalism, integrity and compassion in one of the toughest environments imaginable,” Samaniego said. “I’m proud of their commitment to continuously challenge themselves to enhance operations, increase transparency and maintain custody and control of our inmate population in Shelby County.”

This Year 3 accreditation audit of 134 core guidelines included proofs of compliance related to inmate healthcare, the Americans with Disabilities Act, inmate programs and access to religion, among many others. As a result, the Shelby County Jail maintained its Level 1 accreditation, which is the highest level of accreditation afforded by NIJO. With the completion of this Year 3 audit, the Shelby County Jail has maintained its accreditation for three complete cycles spanning nine years.
