NORTH SHELBY – As the weather began to cool down and bring in the fall air, locals in the North Shelby area took a little time out of their weekend to have some fun and usher in the new season in an entertaining way.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, Oak Mountain Elementary School welcomed many of its students and their families to the school’s campus for its annual Fall Fun Fest, where they participated in a number of activities and made memories along the way.

“This year’s Fall Fun Fest was absolutely wonderful,” said OMES Principal Wendy Cespedes. “The weather was perfect, the turnout was incredible and the energy all around was so positive. We estimate that several hundred families joined us throughout the day. It truly felt like the whole community came together to celebrate.”

The Fall Fun Fest took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and took over the entire school with decorations and activities.

While there, attendees were able to spend time on a hayride and in a pumpkin patch, while also going to the many vendors and allowing the kids to play on the inflatables the school was offering. In addition, there was a large amount of food available, a cake walk and carnival-style games as well.

The school also opened up an online silent auction for people to bid on items over the course of a couple of days when it opened on Oct. 23 and closed a 2 p.m. on Oct. 25, when the festival ended.

As the principal of OMES, Cespedes expressed her excitement to see her students and their families come out to spend part of their weekend at the school, especially as the holiday season readies to ramp up.

“It was such a joy to see our students, their families and so many community members laughing, playing and making memories together,” Cespedes said. “Events like this remind us just how special our OMES family is and how supportive our community continues to be.”

Cespedes added that her favorite part of the day was seeing the third graders of the school’s Blue Bird Choir perform for those in attendance, as well as the cheerleaders, saying their spirit really captured everything that OMES stands for.

Having been running for almost 15 years, the Fall Fun Fest began in 2011 when former Principal Debbie Horton had just started her position, and has and is still put on by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, who uses the money that is raised to help fund its operation and help invest in new purchases.

Being her first year at the helm of the school, Cespedes hopes that what she saw this year will continue to grow for the future thanks to the contributors that worked on the festival tirelessly leading up to its big day.

“I was amazed at how big the event is and how much teamwork, planning and heart went into making it such a success,” Cespedes said. “Our PTO, staff and volunteers were incredible. Next year, I hope to build on what worked so well this year and make the day even more enjoyable and meaningful for our families.”
