HOOVER – The Spain Park Jaguars closed out their regular season in dominant fashion on Senior Night, overcoming a slow start to roll past Gardendale 45–17 on Thursday, Oct. 30, at Bob Finley Field.
After falling behind 7–0 early, the Jaguars found their rhythm behind quarterback Brock Bradley, who threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns to spark a 45–10 run the rest of the way.
“We’ve got to do a better job of having them ready coming out,” Spain Park head coach Tim Vakakes said. “I don’t think we were ready to play mentally. Gardendale did some good things on offense, but we have to do a better job of coming out and playing better defense. That’s on me. But I’m proud of the kids. Nobody panicked—they just kept swinging and eventually they figured it out.”
Once Spain Park settled in, its offense caught fire. Bradley connected with Mason McClure for a long touchdown as the junior receiver finished with three catches for 150 yards and two scores. Kena Rego added 80 yards and a touchdown on four receptions, while Barrett Price and JD Thompson also found the end zone through the air.
In total, Spain Park racked up 396 passing yards and 126 rushing yards, with Nik McKissic leading the ground game at 55 yards on 10 carries.
The Jaguars’ defense rebounded after a sluggish first quarter, forcing multiple stops and holding Gardendale’s offense to under 20 points. Spain Park’s special teams and defense also helped set up short fields that turned into quick scoring drives, including an early touchdown run by John Malouf to help seal the win.
The night also carried extra weight as Spain Park honored its seniors—many of whom have been foundational to the program’s resurgence under Vakakes.
“Our seniors have meant a lot,” Vakakes said. “They’ve built this program, and whenever this chapter ends, they are leaving it better than they found it. That’s what it’s about. These kids grew up playing here and that matters a lot. We’re going to miss them, but it’s not over yet.”
With the win, Spain Park improves to 8–2 heading into the Class 6A playoffs, where they’ll face McAdory at home in the first round on Friday, Nov. 7.
“I think we’ve got to have more fire headed into the playoffs,” Vakakes said. “That starts with me. We have to be more intentional, but we’re not going to change a lot—just do what we do and do it better. We have to come out next week with an edge, because McAdory’s a really good football team.”
