PELHAM – A longtime local favorite officially opened its doors in a brand-new location as Edgar’s Bakery celebrated a ribbon cutting for its new Pelham storefront on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The new bakery, located near the Pelham Public Library and City Park, marks a new chapter for Edgar’s while keeping its deep roots in the community. The celebration was attended by city officials, chamber representatives and residents eager to welcome the business to its new home.
“Thank you so much for joining us today for this ribbon cutting here at Edgar’s,” said Andrea Egea of the Shelby County Chamber. “While they’re not new to Pelham, they are new to this location, and we’re so grateful that they chose to relocate right here in the heart of Pelham.”
The new site is part of the city’s growing restaurant and retail district off U.S. 31, a development that also includes Waldo’s Chicken and Beer and Bullet Coffee. City officials say the expansion represents both Pelham’s commercial momentum and its commitment to community-centered growth.
“Thank you so much for making Pelham your home, and what a beautiful place this is,” said Pelham Mayor Rick Wash. “We love having partnerships with companies like Edgar’s. Edgar’s used to be the best kept secret in Pelham, but that’s not the case anymore. Now that they’ve moved out here on Highway 31, it’s a different story.”
Pelham City Manager Gretchen DiFante called the new location a reflection of Edgar’s dedication to the community.
“We are so happy—extremely happy,” DiFante said. “What I appreciate about you both is that you were determined to stay in Pelham and expand in Pelham, and we appreciate that so much.”
Members of the Pelham City Council also praised the bakery’s ongoing partnership with the city.
“As part of the council that worked with Edgar’s to keep them in Pelham, we are so happy to have had that work out,” said Council President Chad Leverett. “Thank you so much for staying here.”
Councilmember Michelle Power added that the new location will give Edgar’s greater visibility.
“Most of the people are so excited that it’s close to both the schools and the parks,” Power said. “Sometimes we would forget you guys were back there (at your previous location), but I don’t think that’s going to happen here.”
For founders Terry and Dottie Smith, the ribbon cutting was a sentimental moment—one that marked both a return and a renewal of their commitment to Pelham.
“Twenty-four years ago, we found a little piece of land in Pelham at 499 Southgate Drive, and Terry built a commercial kitchen,” Dottie Smith said. “The city of Pelham has just embraced us ever since. When it came time to expand, we did everything we could to stay here, and we cannot thank the city of Pelham enough.”
Smith reflected on Edgar’s growth from a small kitchen to one of Alabama’s most beloved bakeries, giving credit to their faith and the people who helped build the business.
“It is no secret that Terry and I are people of faith, and we give all the credit and glory to God,” Smith said. “We’re just going to keep on keeping on.”
Founded in Birmingham in 1998, Edgar’s Bakery has grown to 11 locations across Alabama, known for its handcrafted cakes, pastries and signature Southern charm.
The Pelham expansion—valued at $2 million according to city records—comes amid a wave of new commercial development near the library and city park, part of a broader effort to make Pelham a destination for dining and community gathering.
As Mayor Wash noted, Edgar’s newest home may be new in look, but not in heart.
“We’re proud that you chose to stay right here in Pelham,” Wash said. “This building, this location—it’s a sign of what Pelham is becoming.”
