MONTEVALLO – The candidates for the Montevallo City Council and city mayor have been set for this year’s Municipal Election on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The qualifying period for candidates running for Montevallo City Council or mayoral office ended on Tuesday, June 24, setting the stage for the election in the coming weeks.

Incumbent mayor Rusty Nix is running for reelection to a second term to the position, and previously stated that if elected it will be his final term as mayor. Local resident Rod Macpherson is challenging Nix in the race.

Various races within Montevallo are uncontested, meaning that current elected officials are set to be reelected to their current roles. The following incumbents were declared elected to their respective seats on the Montevallo City Council during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 14:

  • David King, Montevallo City Council District 1
  • Lelia Mitchell, Montevallo City Council District 2
  • Kenneth Dukes, Montevallo City Council District 3

The incumbent of City Council District 4, Sonya Swords, will be challenged by Montevallo resident Brandelyn Nelson for the role. Swords was appointed to her current role in 2020.

District 5 incumbent Martha Ann Eisenberg is running for reelection to her current position, and will face Jimmy Bice and Alyssa Green for the role.

The newly elected candidates from the Municipal Election will take office on the first Monday in November following the election.

Before the election, Shelby County Newsmedia is holding a Montevallo-focused election forum on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre. The forum will feature all of the election’s contested seats. More details on the forum are coming soon.
