MONTEVALLO – Montevallo Middle School had a Treasure House for its students on Dec. 12 and 13.

Students from sixth to eighth grade whose names were on the Angel Tree could shop for their parents, guardians or friends in the Treasure House.

The items in the shop were all donated by teachers, school staff and members of the PTO, according to Amy Green, the event’s organizer.

Although they called it shopping, all items in the store were free.

“Those kids may not get the opportunity to go out and get anything for their family,” Green said. “The Peer Helpers do this to help Angel Tree children get things for their parents and siblings.”

Students from the Angel Tree first provided a list of people in their home so the helpers could know their needs and provide guidance.

When shoppers arrived, Peer Helpers guided them through the gifts and assisted them in picking out items.

The Treasure House was arranged by age and gender, according to Green. This made it easier to find appropriate gifts for each family member.

Among items donated to the store were toys, clothing, jewelry, household items, books and Christmas decorations, according to Green.

After the children picked their items, Peer Helpers wrapped the gifts so they would be a surprise even if the parents had to come pick up the gifts.

The Peer Helpers are a student leadership team of seventh and eighth graders who organize events to help fellow students through tutoring, counseling and leadership.
