PELHAM – It was a battle of bats and bragging rights as the Pelham Fire Department and Pelham Police Department squared off in the second annual Home Run Derby on Friday, May 23. In a spirited showdown, the Fire Department came out on top once again, defending its title with a six-home-run performance.

The event is part of Pelham Strong’s “Walk for Christ” celebration and brings together community members, youth athletes and first responders for an afternoon of friendly competition and fellowship. Little league players and coaches also take part, adding to the festive, family-friendly atmosphere.

This year’s derby also served a charitable purpose: community members could donate funds to give each department additional time at the plate. As a result, the Fire Department had 2 minutes and 19 seconds to bat, while the Police Department had 2 minutes and 13 seconds.

“It’s more friendly competition, but neither side wants to lose,” Pelham Fire Chief Mike Reid said. “The Fire won with six total home runs—Drew Babyak hit two, and Dallas Rogers hit four. The PD didn’t hit any this year, but it was a great time for all involved.”

While there were no standout individual performances beyond the top scorers, Reid said the fun lies in the camaraderie and the chance for kids to cheer on their favorite public safety heroes.

“I think it’s a great time to root for your personnel and department,” Reid said. “The kids get to root for their favorite public safety group. And of course, the Fire Department gets bragging rights for another year—that’s always fun too!”

The annual derby continues to grow as a local tradition, blending Pelham’s passion for baseball with its commitment to community and Christ-centered service.
