Parnell Memorial Library hosts Homeschool Hub Field Day

MONTEVALLO – The Parnell Memorial Library recently hosted an outdoor field day for homeschoolers in the Montevallo area, celebrating the end of the school year with a day of camaraderie and fun.

The Homeschool Hub Field Day featured a litany of events designed to bring kids together and foster a fun environment. Marissa Wilson, the director of the Parnell Memorial Library, explained the inspiration behind creating the event.

“When you’re in public school, at the end of the year you have a field day to round out the year and have fun and (celebrate) the camaraderie of being together,” Wilson said. “With homeschoolers, you don’t really get that… I wanted to give other homeschoolers that opportunity to have a field day.”

The event was organized into various activities and age categories and was held at Montevallo Elementary school’s football field. Wilson expressed that the event is an important community-builder for homeschoolers and their families to celebrate the end of the school year.

“I was a homeschooler my entire life,” Wilson said. “Homeschoolers don’t get to do certain things that public schoolers could get to, and (we) wanted to be able to offer that space to them.”

The following events were featured at the Homeschool Hub Field Day:

– Tug of war

– Sponge and bucket relay

– Water balloon throw

– Hula hoop

– Wheelbarrow race

– Running races

– Water balloon and spoon race
