Shelby County announces free landfill days

COLUMBIANA – Shelby County will be hosting free landfill days for residents at the Shelby County Highway 70 Landfill on Saturday, March 29 and Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025.

The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days. The event is open to residents, churches and civic groups in the Shelby County area to dispose of trash and debris at the landfill for free. The landfill accepts most items for disposal, but does not accept hazardous waste, automobile batteries, vehicle tires and liquid wastes.

Trey Gauntt, the chief facilities management officer with Shelby County, gave more background on the event and its purpose.

“We allow these two days every year to allow residents of our county to do spring cleaning and fall cleaning around their homes,” Gauntt said. “We allow that opportunity for them to come into our landfill for free during those two days.”

Gauntt also took time to acknowledge the hard work done by the landfill’s staff to ensure that the days are safe and efficient for Shelby County residents.

“We really take pride in what the landfill staff does with those two days because it’s all hands on deck,” Gauntt said. “We have so much traffic coming in those days, and the landfill staff do a remarkable job making sure that residents get in and out quickly as possible. They are preparing several days beforehand to make sure things are ready.”

Landfill rates for in-county residents are $30 per ton, while rates for out-of-county residents are $45 per ton. Both rates include a $1 Alabama Department of Environmental Management.
