PELHAM – On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Pelham City Schools’ students got the chance to learn more about the country that they live in.

The Liberty Learning Foundation, with support from the Shelby County Community Alliance, launched the Hands on Liberty Program to educate Pelham Oaks Elementary School second-graders on American history and civics. The event featured a live performance from Libby Liberty and kicked off a 10-week program featuring lessons on civic responsibility, financial literacy, character development and career skills.

The event was held from 9-10 a.m. and started with the introduction of Libby Liberty. Cynthia Green, the vice president of educational resources for Liberty Learning, gave a picture of what Libby Liberty said to the students.

“She told them how she came to the United States as a gift from France and some interesting facts, such as how long her fingers (three feet) and mouth (eight feet) are and how many steps (354) it takes to reach the top of her crown,” Green said.

Students were then introduced to a character named Mr. Palmer. Green described this new figure in detail.

“(Mr. Palmer) is a dynamic character who will guide them (students) through online videos/lessons in civics, character development, financial literacy and our great American story,” Green said.

Green believes that the use of the two characters provides an unparalleled practical experience in American-centered education.

“The hands-on relevance and excitement built into the Liberty Learning Programs sets them apart—it is an experience,” Green said.

Students and teachers alike huddled together for a group photo with Libby Liberty at the event’s conclusion. They were then dismissed to their classrooms to learn more about the 10-week program and what will be covered.

Students were also encouraged to nominate Helping Hands Heroes within their community. These heroes are everyday citizens in the community making a difference. Green gave more details on the program and its implementation.

“These individuals will be recognized at a graduation celebration on Monday, April 21,” Green said. “This culminating event will be a powerful way to make a lasting impression on students and the community.”

Green also emphasized that the Liberty Learning Foundation wants to be a continued partner of Pelham City Schools.

“In the future, Liberty Learning Foundation would like to offer additional resources to elementary, middle and high school students in Pelham City Schools,” Green said. “Our innovative programs aim to inspire a new generation of informed and engaged citizens.”
