Montevallo boys and girls soccer uses timely offense to defeat Northside High

MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Bulldogs capitalized on plenty of scoring chances on the road against the Northside Rams, with the boys winning 4-2 and the girls winning 2-0 on Tuesday, March 18.

The Montevallo boys came into the game on a hot streak, winning four of their last five games. One of those games included a 21-0 victory over Sipsey Valley on Monday, March 3 that was a prolific offensive display.

The Northside boys also came into the game hot, flying high after also winning four of their last five games. The Rams most recent contest before the Montevallo matchup was a 10-0 win on the road against Shelby County.

The game started off slow, with neither team gaining an edge until the 15th minute of the game. Jesus Munoz, a center back for the Bulldogs, committed a handball in the box, leading to Andy Otero converting a penalty kick for the Rams and putting them up 1-0.

Five minutes later, Irving Choto responded for Montevallo, converting an excellent assist from Alexis Lopez to knot the game at 1-1.

Ricky Chavez then scored for the Bulldogs four minutes later, adding to an offensive flurry that put them ahead 2-1. Chavez capitalized off of a deflection from Northside’s netminder to put Montevallo ahead.

The Bulldogs weren’t done, with Lopez scoring a beauty from outside the box in the 30th minute to put them up 3-1 over the Rams. This concluded the scoring in the first half, with Montevallo up two goals headed to the locker room.

More great defense from both teams was the story of the early second half. Otero completed a brace for Northside in the 58th minute, narrowing the Bulldogs lead to 3-2.

Lopez then matched Otero’s brace, scoring his second goal in the 68th minute to put the lead at 4-2 for good.

On the girls side, Gloribel Sanchez and Zabdy Perez each scored a goal for Montevallo to contribute to the 2-0 shutout. Sanchez scored in the first half, while Perez scored off an assist from Yazmin Chavez in the second half.

The Bulldogs also came into the game winning three of their last four games, while the Rams came in winning five of their last six.

Up next for the Montevallo boys is a home matchup against the Calera Eagles on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. The Rams boys, meanwhile, will play at home again to face American Christian Academy on Friday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m.

The Montevallo girls will face Calera on Thursday, March 20 at 5 p.m., while the Northside girls will face American Christian Academy on Friday, March 21 at 5:30.
