Montevallo Legacy Project dedicates historic sites

FROM STAFF REPORTS

MONTEVALLO – The city of Montevallo and the Montevallo Legacy Project celebrated the city’s rich history by dedicating three new markers on the African American Heritage Trail on Sunday, May 4.

Epsibeth Missionary Baptist Church, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, and The Little School in Jacksonville were the three sites dedicated in the day’s event. Following the dedications, a reception was held at Parnell Memorial Library.

Adopted by the city of Montevallo in August 2022, the African American Heritage Trail features markers, plaques, signage and digital resources that celebrate significant sites of Black history and culture in and around Montevallo.

The event featured members of the Montevallo City Council, local clergy and more Montevallo residents coming together to celebrate the city and its African American heritage.

Kathy King, the president of the Montevallo Legacy Project, reflected on the day and its importance.

“My general personal response was a huge sense of gratitude that this was happening,” King said. “I was grateful that so many people from different walks were there with a common purpose. The Heritage Trail is creating spaces and places and occasions where that can happen.”
