SAS Tax and Accounting celebrates 20th anniversary

By DAVE DOMESCIK | Staff Writer

PELHAM – SAS Tax and Accounting, an accounting and taxation firm located in Pelham, is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025.

The firm offers a comprehensive range of financial services for business owners, executives and more. Susan Smith, the owner, CEO and president of SAS, explained that the business started from a place of wanting to help others.

“I generally have had a heart to help people with an entrepreneurial spirit,” Smith said. “Numbers have always come easier to me… I kind of just started going down that direction of helping small businesses with bookkeeping and tax preparation… I just really love to help folks.”

Like any new business, Smith started small before SAS grew into one of the premier firms in Shelby County.

“When I started out, it was just me working out of the house,” Smith said. “I didn’t have any employees and had a very small client base… Now, we run a full gamut of accounting services, and I have a 12-person staff. We’ve grown quite a bit over the last 20 years.”

Smith detailed the types of clients SAS typically serves on a regular basis.

“We typically serve owner-operated small service base businesses,” Smith said. “Businesses hat have four or less owners is a good niche for us… We try to be a firm that explains and makes the financial world understandable for our clients. It’s really important to me that they understand their finances as much as they want to.”

With the company celebrating the two-decade mark, Smith is already looking ahead to the future for SAS.

“(We want) to be a continual rock for the city of Pelham,” Smith said. “We are here to stay… I see our presence growing and expanding throughout Shelby County.”
