Socks of Love: Pelham seniors craft holiday joy for newborns and families

By DAVE DOMESCIK | Staff Writer

PELHAM – Every Tuesday at the Pelham Senior Center, a group of dedicated volunteers gathers not just for fellowship, but to create something truly special—handmade Christmas stockings for newborns spending their first holiday season at St. Vincent’s-UAB. The initiative, known as Socks of Love, has become a heartfelt tradition for the senior center, combining creativity, compassion and community service.

“It’s not just about making a stocking—it’s about the care, thought and compassion that go into every stitch,” said Katie Augsburger, Pelham Senior Center supervisor.

The program began two years ago when senior center member June Lassiter, who had previously participated in a similar initiative at the hospital, suggested bringing it to Pelham. The idea took off immediately.

“We introduced the idea to our senior center, and the response was immediate and enthusiastic,” Augsburger said. “It’s been going strong ever since, with members pouring their time, creativity and love into every handmade stocking.”

Each stocking is sewn from soft felt and decorated with ribbons, buttons, embroidery and festive cheer. The finished stockings are gifted to families whose babies are born in December at St. Vincent’s-UAB, offering a gesture of warmth and support during what can be an emotionally complex time.

“Welcoming a baby in December can come with unexpected emotions,” Augsburger said. “A handmade Christmas stocking serves as a heartfelt gesture, letting these families know they are seen, supported and celebrated.”

Each year, the program produces between 75 and 90 stockings, crafted by a team of about 12 to 15 regular volunteers—many of whom are grandparents themselves. Their motivation is both personal and communal.

“Our volunteers are incredibly generous, creative and community-minded,” Augsburger said. “They enjoy sewing, crafting and giving back. This allows them to use their talents for a beautiful cause.”

While some members focus on sewing, others help by cutting fabric, assembling designs or adding personalized decorations. It’s a team effort that fills the center with purpose and joy.

“It gives our members a purpose that reaches beyond our walls,” Augsburger said. “It’s especially meaningful during the holidays, a time when many people reflect on family, tradition and giving.”

For anyone in the Pelham community who wants to support Socks of Love, there are multiple ways to get involved. The senior center welcomes donations of fabric, ribbon and sewing supplies, as well as volunteer help from those 55 and older who are interested in sewing, cutting or assembling.

“Anyone interested in supporting Socks of Love can reach out to the senior center for more details,” Augsburger said. “We’d love to have them join us in spreading a little love this holiday season.”

As each stocking is stitched with care, it becomes more than just a Christmas keepsake—it becomes a symbol of community, kindness and the power of giving back.
