Spain Park wins Area 8 championship

HOOVER – The Spain Park Lady Jags captured the Class 6A, Area 8 championship with a 61-44 victory over the Oak Mountain Lady Eagles Feb. 9 at Spain Park.

The Lady Jags (22-8) hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter to take a 16-10 lead. Spain Park held Oak Mountain to just two field goals in the second while holding the Lady Eagles to six points for a 28-16 halftime edge.

Oak Mountain shot a game-low 19 percent from the field in the third and the Lady Jags were able to take advantage to extend their lead to 46-26 heading into the fourth.

The Lady Eagles (17-11) cut into the Spain Park lead in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to capture the lead to fall 61-44.

Oak Mountain MacKenzie led all scorers with 20 points for the Lady Eagles.

Victoria Baldwin led Spain Park with 17 points and seven rebounds. Denise Newton scored 13 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Gaston finished with 11 points for the Lady Jags.

Newton was named the Area 8 tournament MVP.

Spain Park will host a sub-regional game while the Lady Eagles will travel. Both teams await the results of the Area 7 championship game between Thompson and Prattville.
