18-year-old killed in Sept. 4 crash

HOOVER – An 18-year-old Helena man was killed on Sept. 4 when his truck left the roadway near the Helena-Hoover line, overturned and struck a tree, according to the Hoover Police Department.

The crash happened at 11:24 p.m. when the 2001 Ford F-250 truck left the road on Shelby County 13 near Environs Parkway.

Helena resident Christopher Russell Nelms was the only occupant in the vehicle, and was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Helena Fire Department paramedics.

“The Hoover Police Department sends its deepest sympathies to the Nelms family,” the department wrote in a statement.

As of Sept. 5, Hoover police traffic investigators were working to reconstruct the accident to determine its cause.
