HOOVER—The Hoover Police Department will soon have a new police sergeant promotional exam after the Hoover City Council unanimously approved a resolution allowing the police department to work with the International Association of Chiefs of Police to develop a new test during an Oct. 19 City Council meeting.

The Hoover Police Department’s current exam was developed two years ago with the help of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Hoover Chief of Police Nicholas Derzis explained.

“They developed a test that we’re very, very happy with,” Derzis said, noting the test expires after two year.

According to the agreement between the International Association of Chiefs of Police and city of Hoover, the sergeant promotional exam will be a written, 100 question multiple-choice test evaluating candidates for promotion to sergeant. The exam will cover “agency-specific law enforcement knowledge and general law enforcement knowledge.”

The test will be administered by the city. Answer sheets will be scored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and results will be returned to Hoover within 14 days.

The service will cost the city $7,500, plus International Association of Chiefs of Police consultant travel costs, if any.
