ALABASTER – Of all the memories Freddie Brackin has of his father, Dr. Brice Brackin, over the past three decades, a few of them stick out above all others.

During the Auburn University football team’s string of success from 1993-1994, Freddie Brackin and his father attended every AU home and away game, building memories he will forever hold dear. At about the same time, the father and son also launched a new tradition of choosing one “random” college football game to attend in different parts of the country.

Despite heavy involvement in his orthopedic practices in Birmingham and Alabaster and plenty of hours spent volunteering with Alabaster’s city basketball and baseball leagues, Dr. Brackin always made time for his family.

“Those are great memories,” Freddie Brackin said during a Jan. 13 interview. “He always made time to do what me, my sister or those close to him wanted to do.”

Dr. Brackin died at Shelby Baptist Medical Center on Monday, Jan. 11, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of involvement and volunteerism in the communities he called home.

Dr. Brackin was born in Town Creek in Lawrence County, lived in Alabaster for 26 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Pelham. He graduated from Hazlewood High School in Town Creek in 1963, attended AU and was the Outstanding Engineering Graduate in March 1969. He graduated from the University of Alabama Medical School in 1973 and finished his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center in 1977.

From 1977 until his retirement in 2008, Dr. Brackin operated private orthopedic surgery practices in Birmingham and Alabaster. He earned his juris doctorate degree from the Birmingham School of Law in 1979, and he became a member of the Alabama Bar Association in 1980.

Dr. Brackin regularly performed charitable acts without publicizing them, his son said.

“I had a buddy in Arizona who called me and told me dad used to mail him $100 a month, and they used that money to eat,” Freddie Brackin said. “I had no idea he did that. He did a lot for people, but he never made a big deal about it.

“He really enjoyed being here,” Freddie Brackin said.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Pelham on Thursday, Jan. 14, from 3:30–6:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Pelham.

Graveside services will be conducted at Elmwood Cemetery in Town Creek at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to a charity of your choice or one of the following: St. Judes Children’s Hospital, The Gideons or First Baptist Church, Pelham.
