Oak Mountain starts 2-0 on baseball diamond

NORTH SHELBY – Oak Mountain is taking part in the Jay D. Kynerd tournament, hosted by Briarwood, to start the 2016 season and the official Derek Irons era. Through two games of the tournament, Oak Mountain has played well, beating Ramsay and John Carroll handily.

 

Game 1. Oak Mountain 7 – Ramsay 3.

Senior Michael Flack got the win, working five innings and striking out 10 batters. Flack gave up three runs, two of them earned. Ethan Holsembeck pitched the final two innings to close out the game. Joseph Hartsfield had two triples and drove in a run while scoring two himself to lead Oak Mountain from the plate. Garrett DeAraujo also tripled in the game, driving in three runs and clearing the bases in the process.

 

Game 2. Oak Mountain 14 – John Carroll Catholic 2

The Eagles blitzed John Carroll in the second game of the tournament, scoring 12 runs in the first inning en route to a shortened, 14-2 win.

The first 11 batters reached base safely for Oak Mountain in the game by way of a hit, walk, error, or being hit by a pitch. After the offensive bonanza in the first inning, this one was never really close as the Eagles closed the game out in five innings.

John McDonald was 3-for-3 in the game from the plate and drove in five RBIs to lead Oak Mountain from the plate. Holsembeck, Hartsfield, DeArujo and Mason Williamson each had two hits in the game as well. Hartsfield also got the win from the mound, working three innings, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out four.

The Eagles play Briarwood today at 4 p.m. in the final game of round robin play in the tournament.
