Thompson splits pair with Austin

DECATUR – As Thompson has been prone to do this season, the Warriors split a doubleheader on March 25, beating Austin 6-2 on Friday before promptly dropping the next game 3-0 to the Black Bears to move to 13-14 on the year.

 

Game 1. Thompson 6 – Austin 2

The Warriors scored two runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings while giving up just two runs, one in the second and one in the sixth, to beat Austin 6-2 in the first game of the Friday doubleheader. Lance Johnson tossed a complete game for Thompson, throwing 90 pitches over the span of seven innings while giving up eight hits and two runs while striking out four. Johnson also helped lead Thompson from the plate on the day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Layton Waldrop also went 2-for-4 with an RBI as well to lead the Warriors. Riley Reach, Jackson Conner, Heath Haskins and Matthew Blaes had hits in the opening game as well for the Warriors.

 

Game 2. Austin 3 – Thompson 0

Thompson and Austin were deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the fourth inning of the second game before the Black Bears began to open things up. Austin scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while the Warriors couldn’t figure out how to get a run across on Patrick Sawyer, who pitched a complete game for Austin, throwing 111 pitches over seven innings and striking out 11.

Drew Williams started the game for Thompson, throwing five innings, giving up just two hits and two runs before being relieved by Noah Machan who threw one inning and gave up a hit and a run.

Chris Lewis led Thompson from the plate in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Reach, Blaes, Jackson Conner and Brady Kies also each had a hit on the game in the losing effort.

The Warriors moved to 13-14 after the split series, and is now playing a host of games over Thompson’s spring break.
