Alabaster police celebrate officer promotions

ALABASTER – Several newly promoted Alabaster police officers shared the spotlight at an April 11 City Council meeting, as friends, family members and fellow officers gathered to celebrate the officers’ rise in the ranks.

Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon swore in new APD lieutenants Daniel Goodwin, Susan Peavy and Grant Humphries and new Deputy Chief Jeff Anthony, and celebrated the officers’ many years of service to the force.

“They are outstanding members of the law enforcement community,” Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney said. “I have had the opportunity to work with them for many years, and I appreciate the dedication and professionalism they have shown.”

-Anthony has been serving as the department’s deputy chief since October 2015, and has experience in nearly every aspect of law enforcement.

As deputy chief, Anthony oversees the department’s Criminal Investigation Division, Special Investigation Unit, Patrol Division, Corrections Division and School Resource Officer Division. He has many years of law enforcement experience at several different levels. After becoming a reserve deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office 23 years ago, Anthony became an armed bailiff at the Shelby County Courthouse before moving on to a full-time officer position with the former Wilsonville Police Department.

From Wilsonville, Anthony moved on to the Alabaster Police Department, where he has been for the past two decades serving as sergeant, detective sergeant, detective lieutenant, lieutenant, captain and now deputy chief.

-Goodwin joined the APD patrol division 2003 and became a forensic investigator with the department in 2004.

“To say Daniel flourished in the forensic sciences is an understatement,” Rigney said.

He is a certified crime scene investigator, traffic homicide reconstructionist, digital forensic examiner, team leader with the Shelby County Traffic Homicide Task Force and serves on the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force, Alabama Electronics Crime Task Force and Project Lifesaver.

Goodwin holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and leads the APD Special Investigations Division.

-During his time serving with the APD, Humphries has served has handled homicide investigations, crimes against children – including death investigations – hate crimes and immigration and customs enforcement.

Humphries serves as head of the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force. He holds a bachelor’s degree in homeland security, and is in charge of the APD Criminal Investigations Division.

-Peavy has been serving with the APD since 2006. She worked in the department’s Criminal Investigation Division from 2007-2011 as detective, became a sergeant with the Patrol Division from 2011-2013 then moved to the department’s Administrative Division.

She is a certified domestic violence instructor. She is in charge of the department’s Administrative Division, and holds a bachelor’s degree in history.
