With the Class 4A, Section 4 tournament coming up May 3-4, the Montevallo High School Lady Bulldogs spent last week tuning up with a trio of home victories.

In the process, MHS surpassed the school record for wins, which was set two years ago when the Lady Dogs posted a 21-13 mark.

On Tuesday, Montevallo pounded out 11 hits to post a 13-3 mercy rule victory over Greensboro.

Molly Walker and Dee Dee Ray paced the Lady Dog offense, which blew the game open and ended it with a six-run fifth inning.

Walker went 3 for 3 and scored a season-high four runs, while Ray went 3 for 3 with a trio of RBI’s.

Also chipping in at the plate was Brittney Farrington, whose triple and single drove in three runs.

Katie Jones went all five innings, giving up four hits and striking out three to improve to 4-0.

Greensboro got three of its four hits and all three of its runs in the third inning.

On Thursday, Walker did all of her damage on the mound, firing a one-hitter against Vincent to lead Montevallo to an 8-2 win.

Walker struck out four and walked a pair to boost her 2002 mark to 7-3.

The Lady Bulldogs got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first, plating six runs on three hits, three walks, and a pair of Lady Jacket errors.

Following a single by Farrington and a walk to Melissa Staffney, Ray hammered a triple to the left field fence to put MHS up 2-0.

Lauren Stephens collected the third and final hit of the inning on a two-out single.

Montevallo added two more runs in the second when Farrington walked, Staffney singled, and Vincent mishandled a ground ball of the bat of Ray.

The Lady Jackets plated a pair of runs in the fifth on a single and two MHS miscues, but it was too little, too late, as Walker retired seven of the final eight batters she faced.

Haley Dennis led Montevallo offensively with two hits, while four others added one hit each.

Friday saw the Lady Dogs’ winning ways continue, as MHS took a 5-3 home victory over the Shelby County Lady Wildcats.

SCHS took an early 1-0 lead in the second, but the Lady Bulldogs answered back with a pair of their own.

Sarah McMinn’s leadoff line drive to center field was mishandled, allowing the senior pitcher to advance all the way to third base.

Haley Dennis promptly followed with a sacrifice fly to score courtesy runner Shawnkitta Moore.

Another run came across when Leslie Hall, Lauren Stephens, and Molly Walker strung together singles.

The Lady Dogs extended the lead to 5-1 in the third, thanks to singles by Dee Dee Ray and Leslie Hall, coupled with a pair of Lady Wildcat errors.

The score stood until the top of the seventh, when Shelby County rallied for a pair of runs to make things interesting.

McMinn (12-6) got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the threat, however, improving the MHS record to 23-9.

Montevallo will entertain Chelsea on Monday of this week before hosting the Class 4A, Section 4 tournament this weekend.

Games are slated to begin at noon on Friday at Orr Park and Stephens Park in Montevallo.

Play continues on Saturday at Orr Park only, with the finals tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m.

Teams participating in the tournament include Montevallo, Bibb County, Holt, Jemison, Dallas County and Greensboro.

The top two teams in the tourney will advance to the best-of-three substate round to be held next week at sites to be determined
